2023 Activities

The St Andrews Legacy event of April 2023 took place with a great absence at its heart. Graham Proctor, who founded St Andrews Legacy in 2013, could not see his inspiration achieve its tenth anniversary milestone, having tragically passed away from Motor Neurone Disease, or ALS, on 2 May 2020. Participants and organisers were all aware of their responsibility to continue Graham’s work, none more so than Sam Bush, who led a four man team from Australia, just as he promised Graham he would four years previously during their last conversation, and Eric Hatch who accompanied three US veterans to Scotland. Brian Evans, now retired from the Royal Regiment of Wales, and PGA of America Class A member teaching pro David Windsor were on hand to provide mentoring. Former participant Jimmy Reilly made a welcome return in a supporting role.

Starting at Kingarrock Hickory Course, the golfing week included rounds at The Old and Jubilee Courses at St Andrews Links, The Duke’s, Crail Craighead, and the new classic at Dumbarnie Links. The New Club hosted the group each morning for breakfast.

A highlight of the trip was Randy Shack’s 84 on the Old Course, which included two birdies, playing out of a specially adapted SoloRider cart. Eric Scott became a St Andrews golfing graduate with Old Course honours, having been on the beginner’s trip in 2016. Ian McNeill landed an eagle at Crail, and there was more great golf from Australia’s Clinton Edwards and Jaye Evans, and Sam Haro of the USA.
