2019 Activities

St Andrews Legacy began its 2019 activities in April, when a group of six US veterans flew to Scotland from Texas, Washington and New Mexico to meet up with sponsor Eric Hatch of SoloRider and Brian Evans, now retired from the Royal Regiment of Wales. The week took in both the Crail courses, Craighead Links and Balcomie Links, The Duke’s Course, The New Course, The Castle Course and The Old Course at St Andrews Links, and Kingarrock Hickory Golf Course, where the veterans were honoured to meet up with supporters from the University of St Andrews Ladies Golf Club. There were visits to both the St Andrews Golf Club and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Each day began with breakfast at Balgove Larder.

In July, for the first time, St Andrews Legacy hosted a group of women veterans. Six representatives of Renee Powell’s Clearview HOPE programme, Canton, Ohio, and one representative of the Women of Color Golf initiative from Florida spent the week in St Andrews. They stayed at Powell Hall, a new dorm for post-graduate students at the University of St Andrews. In a full schedule, they played and practised golf at the Links and the Kittocks Course at Fairmont St Andrews, met the university principal for tea, and were shown around the R&A as honoured guests. Renee Powell herself accompanied them for two days. Mallory Crosland, executive producer, represented the PGA of America and a CBS film crew, led by senior producer Alvin Patrick, and featuring commentator James Brown, recorded scenes from the visit to be included in a broadcast in November. PGA Master Professional David Scott provided top-level coaching to the group. Also in St Andrews were four Canadian male veterans who were joined by British counterparts for golf at Crail, The Duke’s, and St Andrews Links, including The Old Course.
