2016 Activities

The first St Andrews Legacy event of 2016 was completed in April, with a group of six veterans from Canada and the USA taking part in a week of intensive coaching and playing. The veterans, all newcomers to the game, were guided by the expertise of PGA professional Joe Mendez of San Antonio, Texas. Rounds were played at St Andrews Links, The Kittocks at Fairmont St Andrews, and at Kingarrock Hickory Course, Hill of Tarvit. Ladies European Tour player Whitney Hillier played golf with all the veterans over the Strathtyrum Course; R&A professional Jim Farmer hosted them in the Royal and Ancient Golf Club; and PGA Scotland secretary Shona Malcolm spent a morning with the group. The Universty of St Andrews Ladies’ Golf Club organised a day at Kingarorck, which also featured representatives from the St Rule Club.

St Andrews Legacy’s June event began at Balcomie Links, Crail, moving on to The Kittocks and The Duke’s at St Andrews, before the group of Canadians and Americans spent two wonderful days as guests of the Machrihanish Golf Club. The trip concluded with two rounds at St Andrews Links, on the Jubilee Course and the Old Course. Our thanks again go to Whitney Hillier for spending two days with the veterans.

The St Andrews Legacy July event kicked off at Crail before moving on to The Torrance course at Fairmont St Andrews and then to The Duke’s. A day at Royal Troon saw the participants meet a total of eleven Open winners, from grand slammer Gary Player to defending champion Zach Johnson, as well as many more top stars and coaches, all of whom were happy to spend time with the veterans. The golfing week concluded with rounds on the New Course and the Old Course at St Andrews Links. We are grateful to SoloRider of Dallas for providing us with four of their specially adapted golf buggies; they were greatly appreciated by the veterans
